As part of the ongoing sustainability efforts at Chaifetz Arena, the February 22 Saint Louis University Men’s Basketball game against George Washington University has been named an official “Green Game.” Saint Louis University, in conjunction with; Global Spectrum, operators of Chaifetz Arena; and Sodexo, concessionaires of the 10,600 seat arena is participating in the national Recyclemania competition and the Green Game plays an integral role in the contest.
Tickets to see the Billikens against their Atlantic 10 rival start at just $12 and are available at www.SLUBillikens.com, by phone at 314-977-4SLU, at all Ticketmaster retail outlets, and at the Chaifetz Arena Box Office. Green Game activities begin at 5 p.m. Saturday night.
RecycleMania is a nationwide competition between colleges and universities to raise awareness about recycling programs on their campuses. Saint Louis University’s efforts are aimed at collecting more single-stream and e-waste recycling than any other college campus throughout the competition.
As part of the Green Game, patrons are encouraged to bring new and gently used shoes to donate to the Annual Battle of the Boot competition. Shoes can be dropped off at the "Green Billiken Party Zone." All donated shoes go to support the Shoeman Water Projects.
Highlights of the upcoming Green Game include:
- Pre-game “Green Billiken Party Zone” happy hour beginning at 5 p.m. promoting sustainable local food and beverage providers
- In-game recycling green sweeps by Saint Louis University student volunteers to create an even easier atmosphere for patrons to recycle
- Informational vendors providing details of Chaifetz Arena Green Program
- “Local at Lorenzini’s” will feature locally sourced menu selections during their regular pre-game happy hour
- SLU Athletic Director Chris May expressed his excitement for the Green Game efforts.
"We are thrilled to participate in the First Annual Green Game February 22," May said. "The campus has undergone a phenomenal change with the increased efforts to promote recycling and sustainability programs. We welcome all Billiken fans to join us in this important campus initiative."
The environmentally-minded priorities at Chaifetz Arena were jump-started in early 2013. SLU Facilities Services, in partnership with the SLU Center for Sustainability, wrote, applied for and was awarded a $30,000 grant from the St. Louis-Jefferson Solid Waste Management District and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources to expand the campus single-stream recycling program to Chaifetz Arena.
